How to Create a Cosy Reading Nook at Home

When the evenings get darker and the weather turns, there are few things better than curling up with a good book. A dedicated reading nook makes that moment even more inviting. It does not need a spare room or a big budget: a quiet corner, a comfortable seat and good light are all it really takes. Here is how to create your own.

Find the Right Spot

Look around your home for a space that is a little away from the main flow of traffic. Good options include:

  • A corner of the living room or bedroom
  • A bay window or the space beside a window
  • The landing at the top of the stairs
  • An alcove beside a chimney breast
  • The end of a hallway, if it is wide enough

Natural light is a bonus for daytime reading, but avoid spots with strong draughts, such as right next to an outside door. If the nook is close to a television or a busy kitchen, a pair of headphones or a quiet time agreement with the household can help.

Comfortable Seating

The seat is the heart of your nook. Choose something you can happily sit in for an hour or more.

  • An armchair with good back support is a classic choice.
  • A window seat with cushions makes the most of a bay or deep sill.
  • Floor cushions or a beanbag work well in children’s rooms and small spaces.
  • A chaise or daybed is perfect if you like to stretch out.

Add a footstool if you can, and a small side table for a cup of tea, your glasses and the next book on your list.

Get the Lighting Right

Good lighting makes reading more comfortable, especially in autumn and winter when daylight fades early. A ceiling light alone is rarely enough.

  1. Task light: a floor lamp, wall light or clip lamp positioned behind or beside you, so light falls on the page without glare.
  2. Soft background light: a table lamp or string lights to make the space feel warm and welcoming.
  3. Warm bulbs: warm white light feels more relaxing in the evening than a cool, bright white.

In small spaces, a wall mounted shelf with a built in lamp, like this white shelf with lamp, gives you a reading light and a spot for your current book in one.

Add Texture and Warmth

Soft textiles make a nook feel cosy and inviting. Layer a throw over the chair, add a couple of cushions and put a rug underfoot if you have a hard floor. Natural materials such as wool, linen and cotton add warmth without looking cluttered.

A plant or two brings a little life to the corner, and a candle or a pleasant room scent can turn reading time into a small ritual. Always keep candles well away from books, curtains and throws, and never leave them burning unattended.

Keep Your Books Within Reach

Part of the joy of a reading nook is having your next read close at hand. A small bookcase, a few floating shelves or a basket beside the chair is enough for your current pile. If you read on an e-reader, keep a charger nearby so it never runs flat at the best part.

Finish with a mug of something warm from our coffee and tea range, and your nook is ready for long autumn evenings with a good story.
