Petit, who lives a double life as an enticing charmer who, like a spider, spins a myriad of women in his deadly network of flattery, eroticism and false love. On the bottom line, they lose their lives - to gain a fleeting sense of being loved. It is an evil story told with almost gentle elegance by Alice O’Fredericks, who here emphasizes her artisanal talent in a genre that is far from her many pleasures.
