Dense, rich and uniquely aromatic, this chewy cake is bejewelled with bright chunks of citrus peel and creamy white nuts. Nannini's Panforte di Siena is made to a recipe that dates back to the 13th century. Each ingredient – including the candied fruits and whole blanched almonds – is carefully selected before being slowly boiled with sugar, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. The result is a cake like no other. To finish, each panforte is carefully dusted with sweet icing sugar and hand wrapped in waxed paper.
Simply cut a thin sliver and enjoy with a hot cup of coffee to enliven a chilly morning and tea to perk up a dull afternoon. It's fabulous on a cheese board too.
